y WIBLIA SACRA LATINA, VeRsIo VULGATA, CUM | ProLocis 8. HIERONYMI ET INTERPRETATIONI- ‘jy BUS H#&BRAICORUM NominuM [the last ends at
‘Tiberiadis Visio’’], old calf large folio. SC. XIII
*,* MANUSCRIPT ON THIN VELLUM (360 leaves, 14 by 10 in.) BY AN ANGLO-NORMAN OR ENGLISH SCRIBE, written in neat gothic letters, double columns of 60 lines. DECORATED WITH 133 FINE LARGE PAINTED AND ILLUMINATED HISTORIATED AND ORNA- MENTAL INITIAI, MINIATURES, many with marginal extensions ; also many hundred ornamental pen-letters, with marginal flourishes in blue and red. Head titles of the different books and chapter divisions in blue and red.
THE DECORATIONS IN THIS MS. ARE EXCEEDINGLY GOOD ENGLISH WORK. The historiated miniatures number seventy- eight, and the ornamental ones fifty-five, the latter consisting of involved scrolls ending in grotesques, chiefly serpents. There is a fine full-length strap-initial # before Genesis, containing twelve small circular miniatures of The Works of Creation, The Tempta- tion and Expulsion of Adam and Eve, etc., and there are three or four other strap initials. The historiated initials are very fine and depict the usual subjects connected with the particular book at the head of which they occur, and several have grotesque marginal extensions. The volume was in the CONVENTUAL LIBRARY OF St. STEPHEN AT DiJON, in the diocese of Langres, in the sixteenth century, and has an inscription on the first page of Genesis to that effect; and there are two other sixteenth century inscriptions.
